Chelsea's £30m Gamble on Liam Delap Could End After Just One Season
Former Chelsea star Pat Nevin has predicted that the London club will look to sell striker Liam Delap during the upcoming summer transfer window, just one year after his £30 million arrival from Ipswich Town. The 23-year-old English forward has endured a difficult debut campaign at Stamford Bridge, managing only one goal in 19 Premier League appearances amid injury setbacks and stiff competition for places.
A Transfer That Hasn't Worked Out
Delap joined Chelsea last summer after turning down approaches from Manchester United, following an impressive breakthrough season with Ipswich Town that caught the attention of several top clubs. However, his transition to Chelsea has been challenging, with the form of fellow summer signing Joao Pedro and various fitness issues limiting his opportunities on the pitch.
"The numbers aren't looking great in terms of goals scored and assists and things like that," Nevin told talkSPORTBET Casino. "They're trying to find different positions for him, playing him slightly wider than you would normally when he is brought on."
Despite his struggles, Nevin remains an admirer of Delap's qualities, praising his work rate and ability to stretch defenses. "I really like him as a player. I would love him on my team," Nevin said. "He runs, and he stretches teams, and makes more space for yourself if you're a creative midfielder. And I think the Chelsea fans have got a lot of time for him because he works hard."
Increasing Competition at Stamford Bridge
The situation is likely to become even more challenging for Delap next season. Nicolas Jackson is expected to return from his loan spell at Bayern Munich, while Chelsea have been linked with an ambitious move for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez. This increased competition could push Delap further down the pecking order.
"Chelsea and him, the wrong move? It might actually be the case now," Nevin acknowledged. "But there are some others coming in, you think of Nicolas Jackson coming back, so there is a pressure. Chelsea will move in that position in the summer, they'll do something, and they'll adapt."
Everton Emerges as Potential Destination
Nevin believes Delap's situation resembles that of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who left Chelsea last summer and has since flourished at Everton under David Moyes. The former winger suggested that a move to Goodison Park could benefit all parties involved.
"Delap reminds me of Conor Gallagher and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Different types of players, but a similar situation," Nevin explained. "Great player, fine player, but you're not in the right place. So Kiernan goes up to Everton, and it is great and it is exactly what he wants and needs."
Nevin specifically identified Everton as a potential destination, noting their need for a center forward. "Everton need a centre forward, don't they? So, in my dream scenario, Liam strikes me as the right fit for someone like Everton," he said. "Looking forward, I don't think it would hurt Chelsea, I don't think it would hurt Everton in any way, and I don't think it would hurt Delap if he did move to Everton and then was allowed to flourish."
A Player Still With Potential
Despite his disappointing season, Delap's age and profile make him an attractive prospect for clubs seeking attacking reinforcements. At just 23, he has already demonstrated he can score at Premier League level during his time with Ipswich Town, and a change of scenery could help him rediscover his best form.
Nevin compared Delap favorably to former Chelsea striker Timo Werner, who was appreciated by fans for his work ethic despite inconsistent finishing. "I think Liam is a better all-round player than Timo Werner because there's more technical stuff to his game," Nevin stated. "He's also shown that he can score at this level."
As Chelsea prepare for another busy transfer window, the future of their £30 million signing remains uncertain. With increased competition for places and a need to balance the squad, Delap could become one of several players departing Stamford Bridge this summer as the club continues its rebuilding process under manager Enzo Maresca.
