Charlton Athletic have been left heartbroken after a supporter tragically died during their Championship fixture against Portsmouth at The Valley on Saturday.
Match Halted in the 12th Minute
The game was suspended after just 12 minutes of play when a fan in the home end of the stadium fell seriously ill. Medical staff rushed to treat the individual as the match officials halted play and the players were sent back to their dressing rooms.
Following extensive treatment at the scene, the supporter was taken to hospital. Sadly, Charlton later confirmed the devastating news that the fan had passed away.
Club Statements of Condolence
In an official statement, Charlton Athletic expressed their profound grief. "The club are devastated to report that a Charlton Athletic supporter has died following a medical emergency during today’s game," the statement read. They extended their heartfelt condolences to the supporter's family and friends.
The club also thanked their own staff, the first responders, and the attending supporters for their efforts and understanding. Portsmouth Football Club issued their own statement, saying they were "devastated to learn" the news and offered their deepest sympathies.
A Sombre Day Overshadows Anniversary
The tragic event cast a shadow over what was meant to be a day of celebration at The Valley. The club was marking the 33rd anniversary of its return to the ground. Before kick-off, a minute's applause had been held to honour former players Billy Bonds and Marvin Hinton, who had recently died.
The Championship fixture has been officially postponed. Charlton had started the day in 17th place in the league table, while their opponents Portsmouth were in the relegation zone.
The football community now unites in mourning, with the focus firmly on supporting the grieving family during this incredibly difficult time.
