Camden Town WFC Secures Vital Victory to Sustain Title Ambitions
In a thrilling encounter at the Maurice Rebak Stadium in North Finchley, Camden Town WFC delivered a statement performance by defeating league leaders Hammersmith 1-0 on Sunday. This crucial win keeps their title challenge firmly alive in the London & South East Regional Women's League Division One North.
Early Strike Sets the Tone for Camden's Triumph
The match was decided early on when midfielder Orla Conlan unleashed a powerful low drive from inside the box, skidding past the Hammersmith goalkeeper to find the bottom corner of the net within the first ten minutes. This goal proved to be the sole difference in a tightly contested fixture.
Camden's defensive organization and intensity were on full display throughout the game. Captain Sophie Hoyle made a perfectly-timed tackle to deny Iona Bennett what seemed a certain equalizer for Hammersmith. At the other end, Maria Paz Vera and Josie Shand had opportunities to extend the lead but were thwarted by Hammersmith keeper Emma Vigolo.
Chairman and Manager Express Pride and Confidence
Camden Town chairman Richard Mahoney, who resides in Islington, expressed immense pride in the team's performance. "I am incredibly proud of the players," he said. "The courage they showed, the composure, the work rate – it was outstanding. I'm also proud of the work Darren is doing. You can see his influence all over the team already."
Manager Darren Smith echoed this sentiment, highlighting the team's discipline and execution. "I was confident in the players all week. I believed in the plan and I believed in them to execute it. They showed discipline, courage and intelligence in how they approached the game," Smith remarked. "We just need to keep winning. That's the message. We'll be working hard in training every week and focusing on ourselves."
Historical Rivalry and Supportive Crowd Add to the Atmosphere
The clash between Camden Town and Hammersmith is fast becoming a fixture rich with history. Last season, Camden clinched the Premier Division title in the Greater London Women's League after a 1-1 draw against Hammersmith, who finished as runners-up. A week later, they defeated Hammersmith on penalties to win the John Greenacre Memorial Trophy, completing a memorable league and cup double.
Ahead of Sunday's match, a call was made for a large crowd to create a proper atmosphere, and over 160 supporters responded, gathering in the stands to witness Camden's impressive performance against an unbeaten Hammersmith side that had won 14 and drawn one of their previous 15 league games, with that draw coming against Camden in October.
League Standings and Future Prospects
The victory leaves Darren Smith's side third in the Division One North table, 13 points behind the summit but with three games in hand. This positions them as serious contenders for the title, applying pressure on the leaders.
Mahoney emphasized the ongoing title race, stating, "We are going to push Hammersmith all the way. The pressure is on them now, and I'm not sure they can handle it. The title race is very much alive!"
Injury Concern Amidst the Celebration
Despite the victory, Camden faced a setback when star midfielder Maxine Borden was forced off with a knee injury midway through the second half. She was due to undergo a scan this week, adding a note of concern to an otherwise triumphant day for the team.
This win not only boosts Camden Town WFC's morale but also signals their determination to challenge for the league title, keeping fans and rivals alike on the edge of their seats as the season progresses.
