Moises Caicedo has made a controversial claim that Chelsea are heading in the right direction, despite the club languishing in ninth place in the Premier League. The Ecuadorian midfielder, who recently signed a contract extension keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2030, has set his sights on becoming a 'legend' at the club.
Caicedo's Ambition and Belief
Speaking about his future, Caicedo stated: 'I believe in this team, this club and I know we're going in the right direction. We've only just begun together. There is still a lot more to achieve, and I'm very hungry to keep improving every day. I want to win more trophies with Chelsea and give everything for this club and for the fans.' He added: 'We have enjoyed some great times together already and my dream is to become a Chelsea legend, and I will work as hard as possible to make that happen.'
Current Season Struggles
Chelsea, who won the Club World Cup last summer under former manager Enzo Maresca, have endured a difficult campaign. A run of five successive league defeats without scoring a goal cost Liam Rosenior his job, with Calum McFarlane now in charge until the end of the season. Despite also qualifying for the Champions League and winning the Conference League under Maresca, Chelsea will end the season trophyless unless they beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Fan and Pundit Concerns
A number of pundits and a large section of fans have expressed concern over the direction of the club, both on and off the pitch. Inconsistent form has been matched by baffling transfer decisions from the ownership group that purchased the club from Roman Abramovich in 2022. However, Caicedo insists that major trophies are just around the corner.
McFarlane's Focus
Interim manager Calum McFarlane is focused on the immediate task ahead. After a morale-boosting FA Cup semi-final win over Leeds United, Chelsea face in-form Nottingham Forest on Monday night. McFarlane said: 'I know people don't want to hear this because it's boring, but we just have to focus on the next game. That's beating Nottingham Forest on Monday, and then beating Liverpool at Anfield and trying to tick them off and win as many games as possible, finish as high up the league as we possibly can. That's all we can control.'
Chelsea's remaining fixtures include a trip to Anfield, the FA Cup final against Manchester City, and final league games against Tottenham and Sunderland. With just five points separating seven teams competing for European spots, every match is crucial.
