Brian Brobbey scored twice in the first half as the Netherlands defeated Sweden 2-0 in Houston to move top of Group E at the 2026 World Cup. The victory puts the Dutch on four points from two matches, while Sweden remain on three.
Brobbey strikes twice inside 17 minutes
Brobbey opened the scoring in the sixth minute, sliding in to convert a pass from Cody Gakpo after a rapid attacking move. The goal was the 100th ever Netherlands goal at a World Cup finals, the first scored by Kick Smit in 1934. Brobbey doubled the lead in the 17th minute, finishing after Donyell Malen and Denzel Dumfries combined down the right.
According to reports, the Dutch midfield, led by Frenkie de Jong, dominated possession and created numerous chances. De Jong was described as "excellent" and "proper Dutch master stuff" by observers.
Sweden denied by offside, struggle to create
Sweden thought they had pulled one back just before half-time when Gustaf Lagerbielke headed in, but the goal was ruled out for offside. The Swedish attack, led by Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres, saw little of the ball in the first half. Gyokeres forced a save from Bart Verbruggen early on, but Sweden failed to register a shot on target in the second half.
Graham Potter, the Sweden head coach, had praised Isak before the match, saying: "Alex has had a season that has been interrupted. Most football players would say they need a certain amount of time and games to get up to top, top level, so we've had to try to build Alex up. I think there's more to come from him."
Netherlands dominate despite injury concerns
Ronald Koeman's side started brightly, with Dumfries and Malen causing problems down the right. The Dutch high press forced Sweden into errors, and Brobbey's physical presence troubled the Swedish defence. Koeman had expressed frustration after a 2-2 draw with Japan, saying: "The impact or influence of the substitutions was not positive and I am accountable for that of course."
Frenkie de Jong started despite a minor injury concern after colliding with Quinten Timber in training, who was ruled out with mild concussion. Koeman explained: "There was a collision which caused a light concussion, so Quinten will not play this match. After this match, he might be ready. But Frenkie also had minor complaints about his physical condition."
Group E standings and next matches
The win puts the Netherlands top of Group E with four points, ahead of Sweden on three, Japan on one, and Tunisia on zero. The Dutch face Tunisia in their final group game, while Sweden take on Japan. A point for the Netherlands would likely be enough to advance.
The match was played in Houston with the roof closed due to heat. The attendance was announced as 72,500.
