Bonnie Tyler, Total Eclipse of the Heart Singer, Dies at 75

Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer whose husky voice powered 1980s anthems including Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding Out for a Hero, has died at the age of 75. Her career spanned five decades, from a 1970s breakthrough to Eurovision and beyond.

Early Career and Vocal Transformation

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, near Swansea, Tyler began her music career in local clubs. Her debut single, My! My! Honeycomb, failed to chart in 1976, but the follow-up Lost in France became a success. As the decade progressed, Tyler's voice hardened after vocal surgery, and her aesthetic toughened as she embraced rock and country influences. She also scored hits with disco-tinged songs such as (The World Is Full of) Married Men.

1980s Global Stardom

The early 1980s marked Tyler's most commercially successful period. Collaborating with producer Jim Steinman, known for Meat Loaf's biggest hits, she released the epic power ballad Total Eclipse of the Heart in 1983. The song became a worldwide No. 1, and the following year she scored another smash with Holding Out for a Hero, featured on the Footloose soundtrack. In 1984, she and Shakin' Stevens had a Top 10 duet with A Rockin' Good Way (to Mess Around and Fall in Love).

Later Years and Eurovision

By the early 1990s, Tyler's success was predominantly in continental Europe. She continued to perform live tirelessly, attributing her work ethic to her working-class upbringing near Swansea. In 2003, a greatest hits album returned her to the UK charts, and she had a huge hit in France with a re-recording of Total Eclipse of the Heart with singer Kareen Antonn. In 2013, she represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden, with Believe in Me, finishing 19th. The high-profile performance boosted her career, and she soon returned to the UK album charts.

Personal Life and Legacy

Tyler married property developer Robert Sullivan in 1973; Sullivan was part of the British judo team at the 1972 Munich Olympics. She split her time between Wales and a home in the Algarve, Portugal. In 2023, she published her memoir, Straight from the Heart. She continued performing into her 70s, with a concert in Berlin in May 2025. Tyler is survived by her husband.
