Atletico Madrid are reportedly exploring a swap deal that would send Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres to the Spanish capital along with a cash payment, in exchange for Julian Alvarez. The proposal comes amid intense interest in Alvarez from both Barcelona and Real Madrid, whose bids have already been rejected.
Barcelona and Real Madrid bids rejected
Barcelona had a €100 million (£86.2m) offer for Alvarez turned down by Atletico, while Real Madrid saw their €150m (£129.4m) bid rejected earlier this month. Alvarez himself has now publicly stated his desire to leave, saying after Argentina's 2-0 win over Austria: "I spoke with the people I needed to speak with and the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream."
Atletico's proposed deal with Arsenal
According to Spanish radio station COPE, Atletico are refusing to negotiate with Barcelona and are instead working on a deal with Arsenal. The proposal would see Alvarez join Mikel Arteta's side in exchange for €60m (£51.7m) plus Gyokeres. Atletico view Gyokeres as a "pure and simple centre-forward" who would fit Diego Simeone's system better, and his arrival could allow Alexander Sorloth to depart for Juventus or Napoli.
Arsenal signed Gyokeres from Sporting CP last summer for £64m. The 28-year-old scored 21 goals in his first season with the Gunners, helping them win the Premier League and reach the Champions League final.
Michael Owen's criticism of Gyokeres
Former England striker Michael Owen recently questioned Gyokeres' impact at Arsenal. "Arsenal would love to find another centre-forward – they're not happy with Gyokeres really. They're not happy with a couple of positions," Owen said last month. "If someone comes available that's top, if a Thierry Henry becomes available again, they'd move heaven and earth to get somebody like that in."
Owen added: "They've got to be careful, like a Liverpool, spending £400 million over a summer trying to be even better again, and they ruin what they've got. That's the risk, that's the management, that's the next stage."
Potential impact on Arsenal and Atletico
If the swap deal goes through, Arsenal would acquire one of the most sought-after forwards in world football in Alvarez, while Atletico would gain a proven Premier League goalscorer in Gyokeres plus significant funds. The move could reshape both clubs' attacking options ahead of the new season.
