Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has publicly praised his Liverpool counterpart, Arne Slot, for his "brilliant" and understanding defence of Gunners forward Gabriel Martinelli following a controversial incident in midweek.
FA Cup Progress Amidst Controversy
The commendation came after Arsenal secured their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 4-1 victory away at Championship side Portsmouth on Sunday afternoon. The match at Fratton Park saw the hosts take a shock early lead through Colby Bishop in the third minute.
However, Arsenal levelled quickly via an Andre Dozzell own goal in the eighth minute, before Brazilian star Gabriel Martinelli stole the show. Martinelli scored a hat-trick to seal a comfortable win for the Premier League side, though he was met with frequent boos from the Portsmouth crowd throughout the game.
Slot's Classy Defence Wins Plaudits
The hostile reception was a clear reference to Martinelli's actions during Arsenal's 0-0 draw with Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium earlier in the week. In the dying moments of that match, Martinelli was seen pushing an injured Conor Bradley as he attempted to get the Liverpool defender off the pitch quickly.
The incident drew widespread criticism from pundits, especially after it was revealed Bradley requires knee surgery and will miss the rest of the season. In contrast, Liverpool boss Arne Slot offered a sympathetic view when questioned on Thursday.
"I don't know Gabriel Martinelli, but he comes across as a nice guy," said Slot. "I think the problem for him... is that there is so much time-wasting... that you can sometimes be annoyed... You cannot ask Martinelli to think so clear in the 94th minute."
Arteta's Grateful Response
These comments resonated deeply with Arteta, who made a point of highlighting Slot's conduct after the Portsmouth victory. Arteta described Slot's intervention as "personality" and a fine example of how to speak about an opponent.
"I think Arne Slot spoke brilliantly after the game, speaking of your opponent in the manner that he explained the situation and the fact that Gabi had no intention whatsoever to damage any player," Arteta stated. "And yeah, that's personality. Come in and talk on the pitch, which is the best part of it."
The Arsenal manager also noted that Martinelli was aware of his mistake and had apologised promptly after the Liverpool match.
Attention now turns to the Carabao Cup, where Arsenal face Chelsea in the first leg of their semi-final at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, as they continue their challenge on all four fronts this season.
