Arsenal Urged to Make 'Statement' Signing of Julian Alvarez
Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has publicly urged his old club to pursue the 'statement' signing of striker Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid. This comes as speculation intensifies regarding the Argentine international's long-term future in the Spanish capital, with a potential summer transfer window battle looming.
Productive Spell in Madrid and Growing Interest
Alvarez has enjoyed a highly productive spell at Atletico Madrid since his £82 million move from Manchester City in the summer of 2024. During his debut season, the striker netted an impressive 29 goals, solidifying his reputation as one of Europe's most potent forwards.
However, his performances have attracted significant attention ahead of the next transfer window. Reports from Argentina indicate that Chelsea are actively 'advancing' in talks to secure the striker's signature. Spanish giants Barcelona are also credited with a strong interest in bringing Alvarez to Catalonia.
Arsenal are said to be mulling a move for their former Premier League rival, with any deal likely to cost in excess of €100 million (approximately £86 million). The Gunners may hold a strategic advantage in negotiations, as their sporting director, Andrea Berta, was instrumental in overseeing Alvarez's original transfer from Manchester City to Atletico Madrid.
Petit's Glowing Endorsement
In an exclusive interview with Ignition Casino, Emmanuel Petit left no doubt about his belief in Alvarez's quality and fit for Arsenal.
'When Julian Alvarez was playing for City, I really liked him,' Petit stated. 'He didn’t start every single game but every time he played for City, and for Atletico as well since, he has been really special.'
Petit elaborated on the striker's multifaceted abilities, praising not just his goal-scoring and assist record, but his intangible qualities.
'He can score goals and give assists, but he’s got temper, personality, and character. I think in terms of movement he is very intelligent. Physically as well, he’s a top player and technically, he’s got everything to suit the best clubs in Europe.'
The former French international highlighted Alvarez's desire for regular football as the reason for his initial departure from Manchester City, but suggested Pep Guardiola would welcome him back. For Arsenal, however, Petit sees a perfect match.
'So definitely, if Arsenal have a chance to get him, with the connection with the Spanish players and the way they play up front, I think that would be great news for Arsenal. That would be a very, very good addition to the squad and a statement.'
Barcelona Defender Adds to the Praise
The chorus of admiration for Alvarez extends beyond North London. Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, speaking to Mundo Deportivo, insisted that a player of Alvarez's calibre belongs at the pinnacle of the sport.
'He’s a great player; for me, he’s one of the best strikers in the world. You can see the quality he has,' Araujo said. 'The best players belong at the best club, which is us. That’s obvious. But it’s not my job to do that or make that decision.'
As the summer transfer window approaches, the race for Julian Alvarez's signature is heating up. With a price tag likely exceeding €100 million, his potential move represents one of the most significant and talked-about sagas in European football, with Arsenal receiving a powerful endorsement to make him their marquee signing.
