Arsenal Urged to Sign £42m Fernandes Over Zubimendi

Arsenal should prioritize the signing of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer over Manchester United, according to former Premier League striker Gabriel Agbonlahor. The 21-year-old Portugal international, who joined West Ham from Southampton in a £42 million deal last summer, has attracted interest from both Arsenal and Manchester United as they seek to bolster their midfield options.

Fernandes Compared to Zubimendi

Agbonlahor, speaking to talkSPORT, argued that Fernandes would be an excellent addition for Arsenal and even an upgrade on Martin Zubimendi, the Spanish midfielder who joined the Gunners from Real Sociedad for £51 million last year. "He's a top, top midfielder," Agbonlahor said. "West Ham will be dying to stay in the Premier League. Obviously that won't keep him. The likes of himself, Crysencio Summerville, and Jarrod Bowen will leave if West Ham get relegated."

He added: "I think he's a better player than Zubimendi, I really do. I'm not sure about the hype with Zubimendi. Lewis-Skelly's taken his place now but to add numbers and strengthen [I would sign Fernandes]. I think he could have his pick of Premier League clubs. I rate him highly."

Transfer Battle Heats Up

Manchester United have also expressed interest in Fernandes, with his compatriot Bruno Fernandes recommending him to United's hierarchy. The midfielder's future is uncertain as West Ham face the prospect of relegation from the Premier League this season, which could force a departure of key players.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is keen to add depth to his midfield, and Fernandes, at 21, fits the profile of a young, dynamic player with Premier League experience. The Gunners will face stiff competition from United, but Agbonlahor believes Fernandes would choose Arsenal if given the option.

For now, the transfer window promises intense negotiations as both clubs look to secure the services of one of England's most promising midfield talents.
