Alan Shearer names Arsenal star in England World Cup team

Alan Shearer has revealed the England team he believes has the best chance of winning the World Cup, following a mixed start to the tournament for the Three Lions. The former England striker and Premier League record goalscorer shared his preferred lineup after England's 4-2 win over Croatia and a goalless draw with Ghana.

Shearer's preferred England XI

Shearer's team includes Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who retains his place despite suggestions he could have prevented Croatia's opener and some nervy moments against Ghana. At right-back, the injury-prone but talented Reece James continues, fitness permitting. The centre-back partnership features John Stones and Marc Guehi, with Guehi benched for the opener but starting against Ghana. At left-back, Shearer opts for Manchester City's Nico O'Reilly, who started against Croatia before being replaced.

In midfield, a trio of Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson, and Jude Bellingham appears nailed on, though Rice's fitness is a concern. Bellingham has impressed in both matches. The wide positions remain uncertain: Noni Madueke and Bukayo Saka compete on the right, while Anthony Gordon and Marcus Rashford vie for the left. Shearer would pick Rashford following his bright cameos. Harry Kane is undroppable as the striker.

England's World Cup campaign so far

England began their World Cup campaign with a promising 4-2 victory over Croatia, with Harry Kane scoring a first-half brace and goals from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford. However, they followed up with a more underwhelming goalless draw against Ghana, despite dominating possession. England are still set to qualify for the knockout stages and will top Group L if they beat Panama.

Shearer believes this team is capable of winning the World Cup but views France as his favourites. Didier Deschamps' side have won six goals in two group games against Senegal and Iraq. He also sees Argentina reaching another final after a perfect start, with Lionel Messi scoring five goals.

Shearer's predictions and quotes

“I wouldn’t change any of my predictions from before the World Cup even though all of the big hitters have got off the mark,” Shearer said. “I am still sticking with my original pick in France to win the World Cup, they would be my favourites. They have got some top players, particularly in forward areas, and will be difficult to beat. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if we see another France vs Argentina final like we did four years ago.”

The 2026 World Cup final will be held at the MetLife Stadium in New York on July 19.
