Sergio Aguero has urged Julian Alvarez to join Barcelona this summer, despite strong interest from Arsenal. The 26-year-old Argentina international left Manchester City for Atletico Madrid two years ago in an £81 million move. He helped Atletico reach the Champions League semi-finals, where they lost 2-1 on aggregate to Arsenal.
Arsenal's Interest and Financial Hurdles
Arsenal are considering a move for the World Cup winner, with sporting director Andrea Berta — who was involved in Alvarez's transfer to Atletico — leading the pursuit. Although the Gunners signed Viktor Gyokeres last summer, their attack has been inconsistent this season. Barcelona are also keen, viewing Alvarez as a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski. However, any deal would require over €100 million (£86 million), which may be difficult for the financially constrained Catalan club.
Aguero's Endorsement
Aguero, who moved from Manchester City to Barcelona, called Alvarez a 'complete' player and said a switch to Camp Nou would be 'perfect' for him. 'Julian would be a good signing for any team today,' Aguero told Stake. 'For Barca, everything depends on whether he feels comfortable. If things go well, he'll be a Champions League champion one day. It's very difficult for the player there, but if Barca are looking at him and he is doing well, he fits perfectly. He loves football and has a very dedicated defensive side — something not many strikers have. Julian is a very complete player.'
Alvarez faces a major decision on his future at the end of the season, with both Arsenal and Barcelona vying for his signature.
