The AFL integrity unit is investigating Gold Coast Suns team manager Mark Opie over his alleged links to gambling company Okebet, which was fined $100,000 in 2024 for encouraging players at local football clubs to gamble.
Club Responds to Allegations
Gold Coast Suns have insisted they are acting within AFL rules despite the controversy surrounding Opie, a key dressing room member. Opie, a longtime Richmond team manager and Tigers life member, moved to the Suns in 2024.
According to multiple reports, Opie was part of a partnership known as Okebet, which was fined by the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) after it struck deals with local footy clubs to encourage players to open accounts in 2023. The fine was upheld by VCAT earlier this year, though the matter is still being determined and payment has been paused.
VGCCC chief executive Suzy Neilan said the decision highlighted the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals and community institutions from harmful gambling practices. "Local footy clubs are often the heart of their communities... They should not be used as vehicles to promote gambling," she said.
The Suns declined to confirm Opie's employment but stated that all staff adhere to AFL rules and regulations. The AFL, Opie, and Okebet have been contacted for comment. Opie has been pictured alongside Suns coach Damien Hardwick this season, similar to his role during Richmond's era of dominance.
