From Heartbreak to Healing: How Pole Dancing Transformed My Body and Mind
In a period of heartbreak, learning to pole dance provided much-needed structure and a renewed appreciation for my body. My journey began with a hesitant trial class in Sydney and evolved into a weekly ritual that reshaped my physical and emotional resilience.
A Rocky Start to a New Passion
My first encounter with pole dancing in 2023 was far from inspiring. The studio felt overly commercialised, the metal pole caused painful friction against my skin, and spinning around left me dizzy and disoriented. As a former gymnast, my ego was bruised by my initial lack of skill, leading me to dismiss the activity entirely.
Fast forward to 2025, after the end of a decade-long relationship, I was catapulted into singledom and eager to try new things. Initially drawn to striptease classes for confidence-building, I discovered a Sydney pole studio that offered a trial class for just $15. Despite my reservations, I decided to give pole dancing another chance.
A Transformative Second Chance
My second class was a stark contrast to the first. Natural light filled the studio, creating a warm and homey atmosphere. The instructor, Luci, greeted me with a welcoming smile and infectious laugh, immediately putting me at ease. As the only student in the class, I received personalised attention, learning fundamentals like walking around the pole, chair spins, and climbs.
By the end of the session, I felt a sense of pride and curiosity, prompting me to sign up for a 10-week beginner course. During those blurry days of heartbreak, pole dancing provided essential structure, with Sunday afternoons becoming sacred time for commitment and growth.
Progress and Personal Growth
Nine months into my pole journey, I now attend two or three classes weekly. I created a polegress Instagram account to track my development, documenting milestones like pain-free climbs and dancing in seven-inch heels. My endurance on the pole has improved from mere seconds to over a minute, and I have learned advanced moves like inverting and shoulder mounts.
However, the path has not been without challenges. In my third month, I developed a mild scapula injury from overtraining, which required scaling back classes and starting pole-specific physiotherapy. This experience taught me the importance of listening to my body and practising patience.
Deepening Appreciation and Community
Pole dancing has profoundly deepened my appreciation for my body, forcing me to become more attuned to its signals and capabilities. It has helped me cultivate patience, both in mastering new skills and in navigating personal heartbreak. This hobby represents my self-determination, something I carved out independently.
I have also come to respect the sport's rich history and diverse styles, from flexibility and strength training to performance and floor work. Contrary to my initial solo experience, pole studios are vibrant communal spaces where cheering, encouragement, and shared celebrations are the norm.
Now, I enthusiastically recruit others to join this empowering activity, sharing the transformative benefits I have discovered through pole dancing in Sydney.
