London Set for Historic Tour de France Femmes Team Time Trial in 2027
London is poised to make cycling history as it hosts the inaugural team time trial for the Tour de France Femmes in 2027. This groundbreaking event will see the world's top female cyclists race against the clock on a central London circuit spanning approximately 18 kilometers, passing iconic landmarks including the Houses of Parliament, London Eye, and Tower Bridge before culminating in a dramatic finish on the Mall.
A Full Circle Moment for British Star Cat Ferguson
Among the leading contenders for the prestigious yellow jersey is Britain's Cat Ferguson, who watched the men's Tour de France from the sidelines in 2014 as a young spectator. Now a junior world champion in both road racing and time trials, Ferguson has emerged as one of the brightest talents in women's cycling, finishing second overall in the 2025 Tour of Britain.
"I watched the men's race in 2014 from the side of my home roads, sitting there with my parents, as a young kid," the 19-year-old from Skipton revealed at the London stage launch. "This feels like a full circle moment for me. I will do everything to be there."
Ferguson expressed hope that the women's race would inspire future generations, noting: "I would like to think that I can be an example, that if we'd had a women's race in 2014 it would have inspired many more young girls. That's what we're hoping to achieve next year."
Showcase Finale for UK-Based Racing
The 2027 Tour de France Femmes marks the race's first visit to London, with the team time trial serving as a spectacular finale to three days of UK-based competition. Race director Marion Rousse emphasized the significance of this format debut in London, stating: "The team time trial has always been one of the most exciting and spectacular formats in cycling, and we are very proud that the first one will take place in London. It's a huge moment in the history of the race."
While the men's Tour visited London in 2007 and 2014, 2027 represents a historic first for the women's edition in the capital. The event will be televised to over 90 countries worldwide, with London Mayor Sadiq Khan describing it as building "a better London for everyone" and inspiring "the next generation of women cyclists."
UK Grand Départ Details and Local Perspectives
The 2027 Grand Départ begins with a stage from Leeds to central Manchester, featuring a predicted sprint finish that could suit Ferguson's speed. The second stage to Sheffield presents the toughest challenge with nearly 3,000 meters of climbing across 96 miles, including demanding ascents like Winnats Pass and Snake Pass.
Lucy Jones, project director for the Grand Départ, anticipates the Tour de France Femmes will become the "highest-attended women's sporting event in the UK."
For London-born cyclist Flora Perkins of Fenix-Premier Tech, racing in her home city represents "a special moment." She highlighted London's cycling potential, saying: "People don't always realize that London is a great place to ride a bike. I really hope the Femmes makes London even more of a bike city."
This historic event not only showcases world-class women's cycling but also reinforces London's growing reputation as a premier destination for major sporting competitions, with the team time trial promising to deliver unforgettable drama against the backdrop of the city's most famous landmarks.
