Elite Cycling Makes a Spectacular Return to London's Streets with the City of London Nocturne
In an exciting development for sports enthusiasts, elite cycling is set to return to the heart of London with the City of London Nocturne, scheduled for June 12-13, 2026. This new two-day event, organized by James Pope, founder of City of London Nocturne, aims to become the premier cycling spectacle in the capital, raising significant funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Reviving a Legacy with a Fresh Vision
The City of London Nocturne draws inspiration from the original Smithfield Nocturne, which Pope successfully organized for a decade until 2017. However, this iteration marks a strategic shift, initiated by the City of London as part of its 'Global City of Sport' strategy. Without the City of London as a key partner, this ambitious project would not be feasible, highlighting the collaborative effort behind the event.
Unlike the previous Saturday-only format designed to attract cycling fans, the new Nocturne spans two days, offering a unique experience for corporate participants. Businesses accustomed to leaving London for sporting events will now have cycling brought directly to their doorsteps in the Square Mile.
Pro-Am Racing and Elite Competitions
A standout feature is the GOSH City Criterium, a pro-am cycling race where teams of four riders compete over an hour on a circuit in the city center. After the hour, teams hand over to a professional rider, ideally with a lead. This format encourages teamwork and strategy, blending amateur enthusiasm with elite performance.
The elite event on Saturday will showcase top cyclists, including legends like three-time Olympic gold medallist Ed Clancy and multiple world champion Rob Hayles, both in impeccable shape. Up to 40 teams are expected to participate, each assigned a pro rider.
Innovative Fundraising and Spectacular Settings
In a creative twist, a fortnight before the event, an auction will be held where teams can bid for their preferred pro rider, with all proceeds benefiting Great Ormond Street Hospital. This auction mimics a stock exchange, with bells ringing and competitive bidding, allowing teams to prioritize speed or prestige based on their goals.
The elite race will feature a new circuit running from Bank Junction to St Paul's Cathedral, offering breathtaking views against the iconic Bishopsgate City skyline. For those unable to attend in person, the event will be broadcast live on TNT Sports and HBO Max, ensuring widespread accessibility.
