Henry Nicholls and Harry Callow produced a match-winning partnership of 150 runs to guide England to a six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the second Test at Trent Bridge, clinching the series 2-0.
Dominant partnership turns the tide
Chasing a target of 278, England were in trouble at 56 for 3 before Nicholls and Callow came together. The duo batted with composure and aggression, taking the attack to the New Zealand bowlers. Nicholls scored 87 off 132 balls, while Callow made 73 not out off 104 deliveries.
Their stand was the highest fourth-wicket partnership in a successful run chase at Trent Bridge, according to ESPNcricinfo.
New Zealand fight back but fall short
Earlier, New Zealand had posted 312 in their first innings, led by Tom Latham's 94. England responded with 296, a slender lead of 16. The visitors then set England 278 after being bowled out for 261 in their second innings, with Kane Williamson top-scoring with 81.
England's bowlers were led by Stuart Broad, who took 4 for 67 in the second innings, and James Anderson, who claimed 3 for 54.
Series sweep for England
The victory gave England a 2-0 series win, following a 74-run triumph in the first Test at Lord's. Captain Joe Root praised his team's resilience: "It was a fantastic effort from the whole squad. We were under pressure at times, but the way we fought back showed great character."
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson acknowledged England's superiority: "They outplayed us in key moments. We had our chances but couldn't capitalise. Credit to England for the way they played."
The series win continues England's strong home form, having won their last four Test series on home soil.
