Nintendo has released a remake of Star Fox 64 (known as Lylat Wars in Europe) for the Nintendo Switch 2, developed by Velan Studios, previously known for Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit. This is a near 1:1 recreation of the 1997 N64 original, featuring updated graphics, an orchestral soundtrack, new cut scenes, and a challenge mode to help players discover secrets. The core gameplay and level design remain unchanged.
Faithful Remake with Modern Enhancements
The remake includes all 16 levels from the original, with branching paths that encourage replayability. Players can choose between on-rails shooting sections and all-range mode dogfights. The graphics have been significantly improved, with particular highlights like the underwater Aquas stage now looking as originally envisioned. The Landmaster tank levels, especially the train chase, are also praised. The game retains the original's hammy voice acting and iconic lines.
New Multiplayer and Co-op Options
New features include online multiplayer with three modes (conquest, capture the flag) and AI bot support. A co-op mode allows one player to pilot and another to shoot, with optional mouse controls. The game also uses the camera to animate characters as avatars mimicking facial movements. However, there is no split-screen mode like the original.
Replayability and Challenge
The game's branching structure means players can complete the default path in a couple of hours, but unlocking all levels and secrets requires multiple playthroughs. The new challenge mode clarifies objectives, while expert mode offers a significant difficulty increase. Levels are 10-15 minutes long, but the game remains compelling for high-score chasers.
Visual and Technical Notes
While the remake is technically impressive, character redesigns are divisive—Fox McCloud appears bulkier, and Falco resembles a chicken. A dithering effect in space sections, meant to evoke the N64's draw distance, is considered ugly and unnecessary. Otherwise, the game runs smoothly on Switch 2.
Uncertain Future for the Franchise
The remake aims to rejuvenate the Star Fox series, which has not seen critical or commercial success since the N64 era. However, it does not indicate what a new entry might look like. The challenge remains reconciling arcade-style on-rails action with open-ended gameplay. Despite this, the remake is a welcome way for new generations to experience the franchise's finest hour.
Verdict
Star Fox 64 on Switch 2 is an excellent remake that preserves everything great about the original while adding quality-of-life improvements. The on-rails sections remain highly enjoyable, though all-range mode feels dated. The short levels and branching structure may seem lacking in content, but replayability is high. Score: 8/10.
