Wyndham Clark claimed his first major championship at the US Open on Sunday, displaying nerves of steel to fend off a determined Sam Burns and win by one stroke at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.
Final Round Drama
Clark, who entered the final round with a one-shot lead, carded a final-round 70 to finish at 10-under-par 270. Burns, playing in the group ahead, posted a 69 to finish at 9-under, putting pressure on Clark down the stretch. The turning point came at the par-3 16th, where Clark holed a 15-foot par putt to maintain his lead after a wayward tee shot.
“I just kept telling myself to stay in the moment,” Clark said. “I knew Sam was playing great, but I trusted my game.”
Historic Victory
The win marks Clark’s first major title and his second PGA Tour victory, following his maiden win at the Wells Fargo Championship earlier this year. At 29, he becomes the first first-time major winner at the US Open since Gary Woodland in 2019.
Clark’s victory was built on a stellar putting performance, ranking first in strokes gained putting for the week. He also demonstrated remarkable composure after a double bogey on the 12th hole, which temporarily cut his lead to one.
Burns’ Strong Challenge
Burns, seeking his first major title, birdied three of his final six holes to post a clubhouse lead. His 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th gave him a share of the lead briefly, but Clark’s steady play ensured the trophy stayed with him.
“I gave it everything I had,” Burns said. “Wyndham played great, and sometimes you just have to tip your cap.”
The win also moves Clark into the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time in his career.
