Russell beats Hamilton to pole at Barcelona GP

George Russell claimed his second pole of the season and the 10th of his career at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, edging out Lewis Hamilton in a thrilling qualifying session. Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, was just 0.064 seconds slower than Russell's fastest lap of 1 minute 15.717 seconds.

Russell's Relief

Russell, who had fallen 68 points behind championship leader and Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, expressed relief after securing pole. "It's been a great weekend so far. I feel like my old self again. It's a bit of a relief," he said.

Hamilton's Surprise

Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, admitted he was surprised by his performance after a difficult weekend. "It just feels great to be up there. This weekend's been so difficult... I didn't feel comfortable. In P3 I was easily 4/10ths, 5/10ths off and I was like: 'Where am I going to get that pace?'"

Antonelli's Challenge

Antonelli, aiming for a sixth consecutive grand prix victory, will start third after a challenging session. "It's been a little bit of a difficult weekend so far for me, I didn't really have the feeling with the car," he said. He remains optimistic about the race, noting the opportunity to use the tow from the cars ahead.

Leclerc's Crash

The session was halted early in Q3 when Charles Leclerc suffered a high-speed crash at turn four. Leclerc lost grip while attempting to set a fast lap, careering across the run-off area and slamming into the barriers. He walked away from the incident, but Ferrari's hopes for the weekend were dealt a blow.
