Rodri: Spain can beat France in World Cup semi-final

Spain captain Rodri has expressed confidence that his team can defeat France in the World Cup semi-final, despite acknowledging the formidable qualities of their opponents. Speaking ahead of the match in Dallas, Rodri emphasized that while France are one of the best teams in the tournament, Spain possess the capability to overcome them.

Rodri's Assessment of France

Rodri noted that France have 'great attacking qualities' but also highlighted their defensive strength. 'They defend well in a low block, they're very physical, very aggressive,' he said. He stressed that Spain must take the game to where they want it and control more, as an open game may not suit them. 'We'll have to control more. This is a big challenge against one of the teams playing the best and we're looking forward to it,' he added.

Spain's Tournament Journey

Rodri reflected on Spain's progression through the tournament, stating that the team has grown and is now in a good moment. 'We've got the feel of things as we went, and now we're in a good moment. I see a team that's as competitive as at the Euros,' he said. He noted that the team's form has improved, and they are now ready to reach their level.

Spain have a positive recent record against France, having beaten them 5-4 in the Nations League last summer and 2-1 at Euro 2024. Rodri also recalled winning the Under-19 European Championship with Spain by beating France in the semi-final, with current coach Luis de la Fuente also at the helm then.

Focus on Lamine Yamal

Rodri spoke about teenage star Lamine Yamal, who scored against France in both previous encounters. He noted that Yamal has shown maturity but still has room to improve, particularly in understanding game moments. 'The way to help Lamine is keep him calm. He needs to calm that anxiety, that urge, he sometimes has to show what he can do,' Rodri said. He emphasized that Yamal is intelligent and always listens, making him a role model.

Leadership and Team Dynamics

As captain, Rodri takes on a broader responsibility, especially after the departures of Dani Carvajal and Álvaro Morata. He works to support players who are not getting minutes, keeping them involved. 'You try to be close to those players who aren't playing. It's a personal thing. We've all been through it, we know it's part of football,' he explained.

Rodri highlighted the depth of the squad, noting that players like Fabián Ruiz, Pedri, and Mikel Merino have made significant contributions despite not always starting. 'Important players don't always have to start,' he said.

World Cup Ambition

With 100 games played and four remaining, Rodri sees the World Cup as the highest aspiration. 'The highest thing you can aspire to. That's the challenge, and it's only been done once in history,' he said, referring to Spain's 2010 World Cup win.
