Former San Francisco 49ers star Aldon Smith has died at the age of 36, the team announced on Saturday. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Career Highlights
Smith, a defensive lineman selected seventh overall in the 2011 NFL draft, played six seasons for the 49ers, Oakland Raiders, and Dallas Cowboys. He helped the 49ers reach three consecutive NFC championship games.
In his rookie season, Smith recorded 14 sacks and 27 quarterback hits, finishing second in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. His best campaign came in 2012, when he posted 19.5 sacks—still a franchise record—and 29 quarterback hits, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors as the 49ers advanced to the Super Bowl.
Off-Field Struggles
Smith's career was hampered by off-field incidents, including multiple arrests for driving under the influence, a 2013 arrest on felony charges for possessing illegal assault weapons, and a 2015 arrest for DUI, hit-and-run, and vandalism, which led to his release from the 49ers. He faced multiple suspensions from the NFL for violating personal conduct and substance abuse policies.
After a final season with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, Smith formally retired in 2023.
Team Statement
“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith,” the 49ers said in a statement. “Aldon’s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen. Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon.”
