Ayyoub Bouaddi burst onto the global stage with a commanding performance for Morocco in their 1-1 draw against Brazil on Saturday night. The Lille midfielder, making his first competitive start, outshone even the man of the match Vinícius Júnior, who scored a superb equalizer but was fortunate to receive the award.
Bouaddi's Dominant Display
The 18-year-old recorded the most touches (88), won the most duels (11), and completed the most successful passes in the opposition half (30) with a 93% success rate. He controlled the midfield against Brazil's Casemiro, a player nearly twice his age with a vastly different career trajectory.
Coach Ouahbi's Confidence
Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi expressed no surprise at Bouaddi's performance, having played a crucial role in convincing him to choose Morocco over France just before the tournament. "He didn't impress me because we already know what a player he is," Ouahbi said. "We were sure he'd have a big match."
Ouahbi highlighted Bouaddi's experience in Ligue 1 and the Champions League, including a masterclass against Real Madrid in October 2024 on his 17th birthday. That performance drew interest from top clubs like Arsenal, PSG, and Bayern Munich, with Lille valuing him at around £70 million.
Background and Future
Bouaddi was born in Creil, where his father was deputy mayor, and joined Lille's academy at 13. He made his professional debut in March 2023, three days after turning 16, becoming the youngest player in a European club competition. Off the pitch, he studies mathematics and physics, crediting his upbringing for keeping his mind sharp.
Morocco's midfield against Brazil had an average age of 20.6, with Roma's Neil El Aynaoui and Strasbourg's Samir El Mourabet impressing. In contrast, Brazil's starting XI had the highest average age since 2006, and Casemiro's partnership with Bruno Guimarães is unlikely to continue.
Vinícius Júnior defended Brazil's experience, stating, "We have to adapt to the players we have here. Experience matters a lot, and the young guys will do everything for great results."
