Poplar Named London's Coolest Place to Live for 2026 by The Times
Poplar is London's coolest place for 2026

The landscape of London's coolest neighbourhoods is set for a shift, according to a prestigious new list. While Camberwell currently holds the Time Out crown for its youthful and independent spirit, The Times newspaper has looked ahead to 2026 and declared a different winner: the East London district of Poplar.

Why Poplar Topped The List

In its selection of the 11 coolest UK places to move to in 2026, The Times identified Poplar as the sole London area making the cut. The publication praised the area's unique character, describing it as perfectly suited for 'urban makers'. It highlighted Poplar's rich history in activism, noting suffragette Sylvia Pankhurst's work there, but stated the streets are now prowled by a new generation of creatives.

The Times celebrated the area as an 'architectural melting pot', where brutalist housing blocks, Georgian terraces, and converted old warehouses coexist. These spaces now host a thriving scene of artists' studios, trendy cafes, and popular pubs, forging a distinct local identity.

The Hotspots Defining the Vibe

The report pinpointed several key locations that encapsulate Poplar's rising status. At the heart is Poplar Works, a studio complex housing emerging fashion brands and independent makers. The community is further nurtured at R-Urban Poplar, a garden that runs creative workshops year-round.

For refreshment, residents and visitors can head to The Grapes pub, which is owned by legendary actor Sir Ian McKellen, or visit the second location of the renowned E5 Bakehouse. The Times also gave shout-outs to Poplar Union for its Pilates and pottery classes, Its Thecha for Marathi cuisine, and the classic JP’s Cafe in Chrisp Street Market.

Nightlife and the Wider Appeal

While technically sitting between Bow and Canning Town, the influential 24-hour nightclub FOLD is noted as a major draw for the area. It is particularly famed for its iconic queer-focused Sunday day party, UNFOLD, and has been named one of Time Out's favourite clubs in London.

The endorsement from The Times, published on Friday 16 January 2026, signals a significant moment for this once-overlooked part of Docklands. It marks Poplar's transformation from an industrial and activist heartland into a premier destination for creative professionals and those seeking an authentic, vibrant urban community. This follows previous Time Out 'coolest' awards going to King's Cross in 2023 and Leyton in 2024.
