Hidden £3.50 Train Ride to London Beach Discovered

Londoners are just discovering a 'perfect' little £3.50 train ride along a beach at Ruislip Lido, a hidden gem in West London. As soon as the sun appears, many flock to parks or the seaside, but few realize the capital has its own beach. Tucked away on a nature reserve, Ruislip Lido offers a sandy spot just over an hour from central London.

What to Know About Ruislip Lido

The 60-acre lake is a natural body of water, but swimming is prohibited due to hazards like blue-green algae, which can be toxic to people and pets, as well as waterfowl excrement and hidden dangers such as glass. However, visitors can still sunbathe, build sandcastles, and enjoy picnics on the beach. Other attractions include children's play areas with a splash pad, an outdoor gym, a cafe, and woodland nature trails.

The Ruislip Lido Railway

One of the main features is the Ruislip Lido Railway, one of the longest miniature railways in Britain. The 12-inch gauge railway has two stations – Woody Bay and Willow Lawn – and travels from the car park, around the lake, through the woods to the beach. It offers 'pleasant' journeys with 'beautiful' and 'picturesque' views of the Ruislip Woods. During the week, a diesel locomotive operates, while on weekends, visitors can ride the steam train 'Mad Bess', an oil-fired train built at the Lido between 1986 and 1998, based on the Ffestiniog Railway's 'Blanche'.
