Police seek to identify woman, 60s-70s, found in Suffolk river
Woman found dead in River Waveney on New Year's Day

Police in Suffolk have launched an appeal to identify a woman whose body was recovered from a river on New Year's Day.

Body Discovered Near The Quay

Officers were called at approximately 8am on Wednesday, 1 January 2026, after a member of the public spotted the woman under a bridge near The Quay on the River Waveney. Emergency services, including ambulance crews, attended the scene and recovered the woman from the water. She was pronounced deceased at the location.

Appeal for Information from Public

Suffolk Police have stated they are treating the woman's death as "unexplained" but currently have no evidence to suggest it is suspicious. A spokesperson confirmed that detectives are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a woman in the vicinity of The Quay prior to 8am on New Year's Day.

The woman is described as white, petite, and believed to be in her 60s or 70s. She has short, curly brown hair. When found, she was wearing:

  • A cream cardigan
  • A blue top
  • White jeans
  • White boots

She may also have been carrying a pink coat, a torch, and an umbrella.

Ongoing Investigation

Despite their efforts, police have not yet been able to establish the woman's identity. They are urging anyone with information, no matter how small it may seem, to come forward to assist with their inquiries.
