More than 165 million Americans are enduring extreme heat as the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary of independence from Britain on July 4, 2026. Thousands of events are taking place nationwide, including an international flypast over New York City featuring the RAF's Red Arrows, an international naval review, and a flotilla of tall ships.
Festivities in New York and Washington
The celebrations kicked off in New York with the Times Square ball dropping for the first time on a day other than New Year's Eve. It was lowered eight times to mark midnight across all US time zones and populated overseas territories, starting with Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. The Band of the Royal Marines also performed in New York after entertaining crowds in Washington DC earlier in the week.
In Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776, Britain's ambassador to the US described the relationship between the two nations as 'vital, consequential and enduring'. Military jets, including F-22 Raptors, the US Air Force's Thunderbirds squadron, and B-1 stealth bombers, conducted flyovers in Washington throughout the week.
Trump's Role and Fireworks Display
President Donald Trump promised the largest fireworks display in the nation's history in Washington and was scheduled to deliver a speech on Saturday evening at the National Mall. On the West Coast, Los Angeles planned a giant concert, a free street party, and a drone show.
Extreme Heat Precautions
July 4 was forecast to be the hottest on record for millions in the eastern US, triggering heat alerts. Temperatures were expected to reach 38°C (101°F) in New York, 40°C (104°F) in Washington, and 42°C (108°F) in Little Rock, Arkansas. In New York City, vans staffed by nurses and paramedics were deployed to distribute water and sunscreen, and cooling centres were opened. Event organisers in Washington provided water stations, cooling facilities, and medical support. In Philadelphia, a planned Salute to Independence parade was cancelled due to the heat.
Political Divisions
The anniversary festivities have not escaped political divisions. Trump has been accused of using the milestone for self-promotion. Last year, the White House-aligned organisation Freedom 250 was created, rivaling the bipartisan America250 group founded by Congress a decade ago to plan activities.
