The UK's information commissioner, John Edwards, has stepped back from his role after the data protection regulator initiated an independent workplace investigation into unspecified "HR matters." Edwards, who oversees information rights, data privacy, and transparency among public bodies, announced his full cooperation with the investigation in a LinkedIn post.
Investigation Details Remain Confidential
No specifics about the subject of the inquiry have been disclosed, but reports indicate the investigation has been ongoing for two months. Edwards voluntarily stepped aside on 26 February, according to an Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) spokesperson. Just days earlier, he had represented the regulator at an AI summit in Delhi, which was attended by senior politicians and global tech leaders.
Edwards' Background and Role
Appointed in January 2022 to the £200,000-a-year position, Edwards is a specialist in information law and previously served as New Zealand's privacy commissioner. The ICO's broad remit includes regulating how political parties use personal data for campaigning, how websites verify user ages to protect children, and other data protection issues.
Recent ICO Actions
In February, the ICO fined Reddit £14.5 million for failing to implement robust age verification checks for children. That same month, the regulator launched an investigation into Elon Musk's Grok AI after reports it was used to generate non-consensual sexual imagery, including of women and children. The ICO also oversees the use of personal information by political parties, AI systems in job recruitment, police use of facial recognition, and nuisance calls.
Continuity of Leadership
The ICO stated that Edwards' decision to step back was "to enable an independent workplace investigation which relates to him." The investigation will produce a report with recommendations for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) to decide next steps. To protect all parties and maintain integrity, no further details are available at this stage. The board, CEO Paul Arnold, and the executive team continue to lead the ICO under the scheme of delegation to ensure continuity in leadership and regulatory work.
Edwards' Statement
On Saturday, Edwards posted a message to "colleagues and friends" on LinkedIn: "I wanted to let you know that for the last few weeks I have voluntarily stepped aside from my duties at the ICO while an independent investigation into HR matters is undertaken. I am fully cooperating and engaged with the investigation and will report progress in due course."
