Trump's Approval Rating Hits New Low Ahead of Midterms
A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS reveals that 75% of Americans believe Donald Trump is not paying enough attention to the country's most important problems. Additionally, two-thirds of respondents think the president places himself above the needs of the United States. The survey comes less than 100 days before the November midterm elections, where Trump's Republican party is expected to lose control of one or both chambers of Congress.
Trump's overall approval rating has slumped to 34%, matching his previous low following the January 6, 2021, insurrection. The poll highlights growing dismay over the war in Iran, with only 28% approving of Trump's actions there and just 25% saying the conflict has been worth the cost in terms of money and American lives. Domestically, 74% of respondents say rising gas prices have caused at least some hardship, up from 63% in March.
Economic Concerns and Immigration Policies Draw Criticism
In a parallel poll a year ago, 58% said Trump had not gone far enough to reduce the price of everyday goods; that figure has climbed to 71% this week. Even Trump's hardline immigration policies, once a bright spot, are dragging him down. Only 39% believe he is doing a good job, and 54% say he has gone too far in mass deporting undocumented immigrants.
Americans are overwhelmingly outraged by Trump's personal stamp on the presidency. His pursuit of a taxpayer-funded White House ballroom, botched renovation of the Washington DC reflecting pool, and plans for a self-aggrandizing ceremonial arch have left only 17% feeling positive. When asked if Trump is in touch with problems Americans face in their everyday lives, 73% said no.
Doubts About Leadership and Stamina
Only 38% of those polled consider Trump an effective world leader, and 57% say the 80-year-old president lacks the stamina and sharpness to serve effectively. The poll underscores widespread discontent as the midterms approach, with the president's approval ratings at historic lows.
