Russia launched a series of deadly missile and drone attacks on Kyiv early Tuesday, killing at least 12 people and wounding dozens more, Ukrainian officials reported. The attacks targeted critical infrastructure and residential areas, causing widespread damage and panic among residents.
Details of the Attack
According to the Kyiv City Military Administration, the attacks began around 4 a.m. local time, with waves of missiles and drones striking the capital. Air defense systems intercepted several projectiles, but debris fell on residential buildings, causing casualties. Emergency services rushed to the scene to rescue survivors and extinguish fires.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, stating, "This is yet another act of terror by Russia against our people. We will not be intimidated. We will continue to defend our country and our freedom."
Impact on Civilians
At least 12 civilians were killed and 35 others were wounded in the attacks, according to the Kyiv mayor, Vitali Klitschko. Among the dead were two children. Rescue operations continued throughout the day as emergency workers searched through rubble for survivors. Hospitals in the city were overwhelmed with the influx of wounded.
The attacks also damaged several residential buildings, a school, and a hospital. Power outages were reported in some districts as a result of strikes on energy infrastructure.
International Response
The United Nations condemned the attacks, calling them a violation of international humanitarian law. The US and EU reiterated their support for Ukraine, with the US announcing an additional $500 million in military aid. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said, "These attacks only strengthen our resolve to support Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty."
The attacks came as Ukraine continues its counteroffensive in the east and south, with heavy fighting reported in the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions. Russia has denied targeting civilians, but Ukrainian officials say the attacks are deliberate acts of terror.
