Royal Marine's 'Disgraceful' Sentence for One-Punch Killing of 'Gentle Giant' Chef

The grieving parents of a much-loved chef killed in a single-punch attack have condemned the sentence handed to his attacker as "an insult" and "a disgrace." Cemal John Yilmaz, 29, described by family and friends as a "gentle giant," died four days after being struck by Royal Marine Joseph Jones during a night out in Exmouth on December 12 last year.

Fatal Encounter Outside Exmouth Bar

Exmouth Crown Court heard that Cemal and Jones crossed paths outside the Loft Bar and Grill on Church Street, where Jones had been celebrating with friends after completing military training. The pair exchanged words in the street, with Jones later telling police he felt uncomfortable and that Mr Yilmaz was too close to him.

Cemal reportedly called Jones "a Brummie," to which Jones replied, "No, I'm from Wolverhampton," before striking Mr Yilmaz in the face. The blow left Cemal bleeding and seriously injured on the street, while Jones returned to his Marine training camp in Lympstone.

Cemal was rushed to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth in serious condition but succumbed to his injuries four days later. His mother Ann described the scene: "His jaw was broken from the right hand side and he hit the floor with force. He was already unconscious. His legs buckled from underneath him."

Family's Anguish and Campaign for Justice

Ann and Ozkan Yilmaz, Cemal's parents, have spoken out about their horror at the three-and-a-half-year sentence Jones received for manslaughter last month. Jones, 22, of Chillington Lane, Codsall, pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared at Exeter Crown Court on February 4 and was sentenced on March 13.

"We just couldn't believe it," Ann said. "We were in court, and it was horrific. We were all in disbelief. This shouldn't be allowed to happen. There should be something in place so that those who die from one-punch attacks still get justice."

The family has launched an online petition appealing the decision, which they call "disproportionate" and "an insult to Cemal's right to life and our pain." More than 4,000 people have signed the petition, which states: "We must reach 10,000 signatures to show how deeply this decision has wounded public conscience."

Legal Proceedings and Appeal

Jones handed himself in at Exeter Police Station the day after the attack and was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. This was changed to suspicion of murder four days later after Cemal's death on December 16. Jones was eventually charged with manslaughter and appeared at Exeter Magistrates' Court on New Year's Eve before being released on conditional bail.

The family has lodged an appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) scheme, which allows certain Crown Court sentences to be reviewed by the Attorney General's Office if deemed too lenient. Ann lodged the appeal the day after sentencing on March 14, within the required 28-day window.

Remembering Cemal John Yilmaz

Cemal grew up in south Manchester near Burton Road in West Didsbury before relocating to Exmouth at age 19. His family described him as "Mancunian born and bred" and an "amazing" and "selfless" man who "brightened up the darkest of places."

"Cem as we called him was the loveliest, warmest and kindest person you would ever meet," the family said in a statement issued through police. "He would help anybody in need and always had time for a laugh and a chat. He loved his life, he loved his family, he was the highest of the high."

Ann added: "He didn't deserve this. He had just gone for a night out to have fun, and it was one punch that took him away from us." The family continues to campaign for awareness of the dangers of one-punch deaths and for heavier sentences in such cases.
