Bradford Shopkeeper Reappears After 5 Years, Baffling Friends and Police
Missing Bradford shopkeeper returns after five years

The mysterious reappearance of a Bradford shopkeeper, five years after he was presumed dead, has left a community in West Yorkshire stunned and a police investigation in turmoil.

A Sudden Return from the Shadows

Ismail Ali, the 51-year-old proprietor of Gulam Food Stores, vanished without a trace in May 2020. For years, neighbours and friends believed he had left for good, with some speculating he had moved to southern England to escape family problems and start anew.

This week, the case took an extraordinary turn when Mr Ali presented himself at a police station, reporting that he was alive and well. His sudden return has baffled those who knew him, with some friends now wondering if he had been living in the city incognito the entire time.

A Murder Investigation Upended

Just before his reappearance, the situation had taken a dark turn. West Yorkshire Police, operating on the belief that Mr Ali had been murdered, detained five suspects – three women and two men.

As part of their investigation, officers searched three properties, seizing a large amount of cash. Several of those arrested remain on bail for money laundering offences. The force confirmed that Mr Ali is now being safeguarded but is not under arrest, adding that ‘officers are working to understand the full circumstances surrounding his disappearance’.

Friends Puzzled by Motives and Timing

Friends of the popular shopkeeper have been left searching for answers. One acquaintance suggested to the Daily Mail that ‘lots of rows and stress at home’ had finally driven the bearded shopkeeper to abandon his old life.

Another friend provided a compelling theory for the timing of his return, suggesting the police arrests acted as a catalyst. ‘His conscience wouldn’t allow him to continue hiding if he thought people would go to prison for killing him’, they added.

While one friend claimed Mr Ali said he had been working in southern England, his former employer contradicted this, stating they had no knowledge of his whereabouts during the five-year absence. A resident living near one of the raided homes perfectly captured the community's shock, saying it was as if Mr Ali had ‘come back from the dead’.
