Shock Resignation Rocks US Politics
In a dramatic political development, Marjorie Taylor Greene has unexpectedly announced her resignation from Congress. The hard-right Republican, once a staunch ally of Donald Trump, revealed her decision in a statement posted on social media platform X on Saturday 22 November 2025.
A Fractured Relationship
The resignation follows months of escalating tension between Greene and the former president. Their bond, which was once a cornerstone of the Make America Great Again movement, began to disintegrate after she publicly criticised his foreign policy, labelling it "America Last".
The rift widened significantly when Greene vocally campaigned for the justice department to release all files concerning convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. This prompted a fierce backlash from Mr Trump on his Truth Social platform, where he described the congresswoman as a "lunatic".
Last week, the president withdrew his support and endorsement for the 51-year-old, who had been expected to run for re-election in Georgia's 14th congressional district next November.
Defiant Final Statement
In her resignation statement, Greene wrote: "Standing up for American women who were raped at 14, trafficked and used by rich powerful men, should not result in me being called a traitor and threatened by the President of the United States, whom I fought for."
She added: "I have too much self-respect and dignity, love my family way too much, and do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the president we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms."
Greene confirmed that her last day in office will be 5 January.
A Controversial Career
During her time in Congress, Marjorie Taylor Greene became one of the most aggressive spokespeople for the MAGA movement. She was known for her combative encounters with journalists, including Sky's Martha Kelner.
Her political career was marked by controversy, including:
- Promoting conspiracy theories and comparing COVID-19 masks and vaccinations to the Holocaust.
- Making social media posts that advocated violence against Democrat opponents.
- Casting doubt on the 9/11 terror attacks and school mass shootings at Parkland and Sandy Hook.
Her sudden departure marks a significant moment in US politics, representing a dramatic fall from grace for one of the most prominent figures on the American right.
