Manhunt for escaped prisoner in Woolwich

Detectives are working to track down a prisoner who escaped from a police van in southeast London. Temitope Segun, 25, fled from a prisoner transport van in Woolwich on Monday, prompting an urgent manhunt.

Details of the Escape

Segun is believed to have possible links to Plumstead, Abbey Wood, and Woolwich. He was last seen wearing a black jacket, black trousers, and black trainers. The public has been advised not to approach him if spotted and to call 999 immediately.

He escaped from the van while being transported from court to HMP Thameside, injuring a staff member from contractor Serco. The Serco worker attended A&E and is now recovering at home. Segun is serving time for multiple offences, including the supply of Class A drugs.

Serco Statement

A Serco spokesperson said: 'An incident occurred on the evening of Monday 8 June in Woolwich. The matter is under investigation.'

A bystander captured the moments after Segun slipped out of the fortified van near the Waterfront Leisure Centre at approximately 6.40pm. The man filming said: 'A prisoner just escaped from that van and ran away. If you see him on the road, please call the cops now.'

Police Appeal

Detective Sergeant Claudine Manning from the Met Police said: 'My team of dedicated officers are working around the clock to trace and apprehend Temitope Segun. It is imperative that the public contact police via 999 if they see him – or know where he may be.'

She added: 'He was last seen wearing a black jacket, black trousers and black trainers and has links across south London.' Anyone with information can also make an anonymous report to Crimestoppers using reference 2270/10JUN.

Context of Prison Escapes

This escape recalls the notorious case of Daniel Khalife, a former soldier who escaped from Wandsworth prison using a makeshift rope to tie himself under a food delivery truck. He was captured after 75 hours on a west London towpath.
