Police Launch Public Appeal to Identify Man Found Dead in Wetsuit at Remote Welsh Reservoir
Detectives from Dyfed-Powys Police are urgently seeking the public's help to identify a man whose body was discovered wearing a wetsuit in a remote inlet in Wales in October 2024, marking the beginning of a perplexing mystery that has remained unsolved for over 16 months.
The Discovery and Investigation
On the morning of October 17, 2024, a dog walker stumbled upon the man's body face down in the Claerwen reservoir in Mid Wales. Despite extensive investigations, including searches with helicopters, drones, boat teams, and ground officers, no belongings, vehicles, or clues were found near the scene. Detective Inspector Anthea Ponting stated, "No belongings, nothing found around the banking, no vehicle left nearby. Currently, none of the available information to us suggests a criminal element to it, however it would be remiss to say that new information may not change that."
Extensive Efforts and Lack of Leads
Over the past year and a half, police have pursued numerous avenues, including:
- Public appeals and media outreach
- Searches of medical and criminal databases
- Analysis of missing persons cases
- International inquiries via Interpol
Despite these efforts, the case has proven baffling, with the only evidence being the body and a Zone 3 Agile wetsuit sized XL. DI Ponting emphasized the unusual nature of the case, saying, "It's really unusual. We just want to resolve it."
Facial Reconstruction to Aid Identification
In a bid to break the deadlock, police have released a striking facial reconstruction created by Face Lab at Liverpool John Moores University. Using CT scans of the man's skull, experts reconstructed his face, revealing a middle-aged man with a distinctive dental pattern. Professor Caroline Wilkinson explained, "We see a middle-aged man, who has got an unusual dental pattern that probably would be recognisable. His teeth don't meet and close all the way across. So it's what's called an open bite, and that means that his lips would have been more open at rest." She expressed confidence in the likeness and noted the sadness of such forensic cases, often indicating difficult identification scenarios.
Theories and Challenges
Police believe the man had been in the water for approximately 12 weeks, suggesting he may have entered the reservoir in mid-summer 2024. One theory is that he was swimming and might have had belongings in a dry bag, but no evidence supports this. The reservoir, stretching four-and-a-half miles, poses logistical challenges, as draining or thoroughly searching it was deemed unreasonable. The cause of death remains unestablished after an inconclusive post-mortem.
Appeal for Closure
DI Ponting stressed the importance of identifying the man to provide closure, stating, "I just want to know who he is so that we can try and track any family, friends or anyone who knows him - and that he can then be afforded the dignity of them deciding how he is permanently laid to rest." Authorities urge anyone with information or who recognizes the description to contact Dyfed-Powys Police through their online portal for the case.
