Metropolitan Police have identified and charged a man from North West London in connection with a dramatic smash-and-grab robbery at a jewellery shop in Shepherd's Bush. The incident, which saw multiple suspects escape on mopeds with valuable items, has left several individuals still being sought by authorities.
Chaotic Early Morning Raid at Sultan Jewellers
In the early hours of Thursday morning, January 29, several men targeted Sultan Jewellers on Uxbridge Road in Shepherd's Bush. Armed with a sledgehammer, they smashed the shop's windows at approximately 3:30 am before making off with a haul of expensive jewellery. Police response was swift, with officers arriving at the scene within just three minutes of the alarm being raised.
One suspect was apprehended at the location and taken into custody. Overnight, Jason Daley, aged 33 and residing on Priory Park Road in Brent, was formally charged with offences of burglary and criminal damage. He has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court.
Ongoing Manhunt for Escaped Suspects
Despite the arrest, a significant number of suspects managed to flee the scene on mopeds and remain at large. During the chaotic raid, police officers were threatened with a hammer by one of the individuals, although no injuries were reported among the law enforcement personnel. Investigators believe the stolen jewellery is of considerable value, and forensic teams spent hours meticulously collecting evidence from the shop premises.
Providing an update on the investigation, a Met Police spokesperson confirmed that efforts to locate the escaped individuals are continuing intensively. Detective Superintendent Alex Bingley, from the Met's Central West command unit, praised the rapid response of the officers involved.
"Quick work by our officers meant we were on the scene within minutes and able to interrupt the thieves," he stated. "I'd like to thank the response officers first on the scene, who were threatened with a weapon. We know that incidents like this cause significant concern for businesses and residents, but we would like to reassure the public that we are working at pace to identify all those involved in this burglary."
Appeal for Public Assistance
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the burglary to come forward. This includes individuals who may possess CCTV footage or dash cam recordings that could aid the investigation. Detective Superintendent Bingley emphasised the importance of community cooperation in solving such crimes.
"We'd appeal to anyone with information about the burglary or who has CCTV or dash cam video to get in touch with the police," he added.
Political Response and Support for Police Action
Kaya Comer-Schwartz, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, expressed gratitude towards the police officers who responded to the incident. "My thanks go to the brave police officers who arrived swiftly at the scene and, despite being threatened with a weapon, arrested one of the suspects," she said.
Comer-Schwartz condemned the criminal activity, stating it has no place on London's streets. She voiced full support for the Met Police's data-driven and targeted strategies aimed at tackling prolific offenders. "The Met have specialist teams out proactively targeting the most prolific offenders and robbery hotspots. The targeted action by police is making a difference and has led to significant falls in personal robbery, theft and violence with injury. But this incident clearly shows there's more to do and from City Hall, we will continue working with the Met to tackle these robberies as we continue working to build a safer London for everyone."
