London Braces for December Downpour as Met Office Issues 'Significant' Rain Warnings
London's Wet Start to December with Met Office Warnings

London is set for a very wet opening to the final month of the year, with the Met Office forecasting a drenching for the capital and issuing serious weather warnings for other parts of the UK.

A Soggy Start to the Week in the Capital

The first day of December will see persistent and heavy rain across London. The forecaster indicates a 95 per cent chance of precipitation throughout Monday morning and for much of the afternoon. The downpour is expected to lessen slightly by mid-afternoon before returning in the evening.

The wet conditions will finally begin to ease in the early hours of Tuesday, leading to a dry spell until around noon. Lighter rain is then predicted to return on Tuesday afternoon. Despite the gloom, the rainfall will keep temperatures unseasonably mild, with a high of 12C on Monday and 11C on Tuesday.

National Warnings and Disruption Risks

While London faces a washout, the situation is more severe elsewhere. The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for rain in South Wales for Monday, with a risk of flooding. Chief Forecaster Rebekah Hicks stated that "rain [is] the most significant hazard in the weather forecast."

She detailed that the heaviest rain over high ground in south Wales could see accumulations of 100-120mm, with 60-80mm likely on many hills within the warning area. Broader yellow warnings for rain are also in place for southwest and northwest England, central and northern Wales, and southwest Scotland, where disruption is possible.

London's Weather Outlook for the Week Ahead

The rest of the week promises changeable conditions for the capital:

  • Wednesday, December 3: A largely dry day with sunny intervals and a high of 10C.
  • Thursday & Friday: Intermittent drizzle and light rain mixed with occasional sunny spells. Highs of around 10C.
  • The Weekend: Forecast to be mild and mainly dry, with temperatures holding steady near 10C in the afternoons.

The Met Office summarises the national picture as a "changeable week of weather," driven by low pressure bringing a mix of rain, showers, and some sunshine across the country.
