A driver who deliberately used his car as a "weapon" to plough through crowds celebrating Liverpool's Premier League title victory is due to be sentenced today.
Deliberate Attack on Celebrating Fans
Paul Doyle, 54, from Croxteth, Liverpool, last month pleaded guilty to 31 offences relating to the incident on 26 May. The father of three admitted to dangerous driving, affray, and multiple counts of attempting to cause and causing grievous bodily harm with intent, including against eight children.
The shocking attack occurred as more than 100 fans celebrated on a road closed to non-emergency vehicles. Prosecutors stated Doyle, in a rage, tailgated an ambulance to access the packed area before accelerating his Ford Galaxy into the crowd over a seven-minute period.
Court Hears Harrowing Details
During the first day of a two-day sentencing hearing at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday, numerous victim impact statements were read. Victims described their terror and injuries, with many weeping as dashcam footage was played.
The footage reportedly showed bodies spinning through the air as Doyle accelerated into crowds while screaming: "Fucking hell, move!". Prosecutor Paul Greaney KC told the court Doyle "intended to cause people within the crowd serious harm" and "was prepared to cause those in the crowd, even children, serious harm".
Widespread Injuries and Ongoing Impact
The consequences of the driver's actions were severe. More than 50 people required hospital treatment following the incident, with a number of children among the injured.
Doyle, who was in the city to collect a friend and family from the celebrations, had previously denied the offences. Further victim impact statements were expected to be heard this morning before Judge Andrew Menary KC passes sentence.
