Tobias Gough, the sound engineer known as Hot Podium Guy, has returned to Downing Street as Andy Burnham officially becomes Prime Minister. Gough, who gained internet fame for setting up the lectern for prime ministerial addresses, was spotted outside Number 10 in his trademark black t-shirt, preparing the podium for Burnham's arrival.
Hot Podium Guy's Rise to Fame
Gough, from Longfield, Kent, first achieved meme status in 2019 when Theresa May resigned. He has since become a fixture at key political moments, including the resignation announcements of Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, and most recently, Keir Starmer's departure last month. His job involves testing microphones and bringing out the lecterns, which each take around three weeks to manufacture and cost between £2,000 and £4,000. The Prime Minister is allowed to help design the podium.
Surprise at Internet Fame
Speaking to the Daily Mail in 2019, Gough expressed surprise at his online popularity, joking that he is "not model material." He attributed his good looks in photos to "great lighting" and the sun being at the right angle. "I can assure people that I don’t usually look as well as that – I won’t be going into the modelling business just yet," he said. Gough, now 36, added that his best days may be behind him but found the social media comments amusing. His wife, Tina, whom he married in a quiet ceremony in Scotland two weeks before the pandemic, has taken his fame in good spirits.
