A man dressed as the Grim Reaper climbed onto a hospital roof and stared at patients below, a court has heard. Leon Gillespie, 26, wore an all-black hooded outfit and stood overlooking the entrance to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd hospital in Denbighshire, North Wales, on Saturday.
Hospital roof incident lasted nearly an hour
Police and fire crews were dispatched to the scene after Gillespie remained on the roof for almost an hour. Four police cars and a fire crew attended to apprehend him. Visitors at the hospital were shocked to see him standing motionless, brandishing what appeared to be a long blade.
In court, his outfit was also described as resembling a 'crow'. No explanation was given for the stunt when Gillespie appeared before magistrates in Llandudno. He pleaded guilty to causing a nuisance at a hospital and was fined £200.
Health board's zero-tolerance stance
A spokesman for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board said: 'The health board has previously stated it has a zero-tolerance approach to abuse, aggression or nuisance within its hospital sites.'
Gillespie also admitted separate offences of stealing £30 to £40 of cat food and cat litter from Pets at Home on March 26, and food and drink from Sainsbury's on May 28. Both thefts occurred in Llandudno.
Additional fines and compensation
He was ordered to pay £50 in compensation, £100 in fines, and £100 in costs to the Crown Prosecution Service. The incident has raised concerns about hospital security, though officials have not commented further.
