This week, Labor secured a deal with the Greens to pass its reforms to the capital gains tax discount and negative gearing. The Greens were unable to negotiate a more ambitious proposal to remove grandfathering or cap the number of negatively geared properties, but the party's leader, Larissa Waters, says that the agreement was the best that they could do.
Waters discusses the deal
Queensland senator Larissa Waters spoke to the political editor, Tom McIlroy, about the negotiations. She explained that while the Greens pushed for stronger measures, the compromise was necessary to achieve any progress on housing affordability. "We secured the best possible outcome in the current political climate," Waters said.
Opposition to NDIS cuts
Waters also confirmed that the Greens will vote against the government's cuts to NDIS spending. She criticized the cuts as harmful to Australians with disabilities, stating, "The NDIS is a lifeline for many, and reducing funding is unacceptable."
Stemming support for One Nation
Additionally, Waters discussed what her party is doing to stem the rising tide of support for One Nation. She emphasized the Greens' commitment to progressive policies and engaging with communities to counter the appeal of far-right politics.
