A 'Beautiful Soul' Remembered
The community in Cheriton has been left reeling by the loss of a woman described as a cornerstone of village life. Known for walking her dogs, Gilly was remembered by friends and neighbours as a kind and considerate lady.
One neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said she was a 'lovely lady' and a housekeeper. Online, heartfelt tributes painted a picture of a cherished family member. "Gilly was such a wonderful lady. This is heartbreaking for all involved," one friend wrote. Another added: "A much-loved mother and grandmother. She was a beautiful soul."
The incident occurred in a quaint, secluded cottage at the end of a small country lane, which had been affected by flooding from heavy rain just days before.
Police Investigation and IOPC Referral
Hampshire Constabulary has launched a detailed investigation to establish the exact circumstances of the tragic event. Chief Inspector Korine Bishop sought to reassure the local community, stating that while the incident was shocking, there is believed to be no further risk to the public. Officers are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the death.
In a significant development, the force confirmed it had made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). This was due to prior police contact at the address before the fatal incident. The IOPC has since returned the matter for local investigation.
Forensic officers in white suits have been working at the cordoned-off property, which remains under police guard as enquiries continue. Officers are likely to remain in the area in the coming days.
