Forensic officers were seen at the scene in Golders Green, north-west London, following a double stabbing on Wednesday. The suspect, a 45-year-old man who is a Somalia-born UK citizen, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is being treated as a terrorism suspect by police.
Prevent Referral in 2020
Police have confirmed that the suspect was known to the Prevent programme, the official counter-extremism scheme, and was referred to it in 2020. However, the case was closed within the same year, according to sources. The Prevent scheme has faced previous criticism over its handling of cases.
Police Investigation
The Metropolitan Police's counter-terrorism unit is investigating whether the suspect was targeting Jewish people in the area. In a statement, they said: "We can confirm the suspect was known to the Prevent programme and was subject to a Prevent referral in 2020, which was closed in the same year. Given the investigation remains ongoing, we will not be providing any further information in respect of this matter at this time and we remain focused on securing justice for the victims of this attack."
Met Commissioner Mark Rowley has stated that the suspect has a history of violence and mental health issues. The attack has raised concerns about community safety and the effectiveness of deradicalisation efforts.
Community Reaction
Local residents expressed shock and concern following the incident. Community leaders have called for increased security and support for those affected. The investigation continues as police work to determine the full circumstances of the attack.
