One Year On: The Search for Aleksandr Benga
Police Scotland have launched a renewed appeal for information, marking one year since the disappearance of teenager Aleksandr Benga in Stornoway. The youth, who would now be 17 years old, was last captured on CCTV at approximately 8.45am on 18 November 2024, close to the water wheel within the grounds of the historic Lews Castle.
Extensive Search Operation
In the twelve months since Aleksandr vanished, an extensive investigation has been underway. This major operation has involved specialist search advisors, the police dog unit, mountain rescue teams, the coastguard, and numerous volunteers from the local community. Despite these concerted efforts, his whereabouts remain unknown.
Inspector Euan Cowan acknowledged the profound impact of the past year, stating: "It has now been a year since Aleksandr was last seen and we recognise how difficult this continues to be for his family and friends." He confirmed that all available information continues to be reviewed and that any new details will be acted upon.
Description and Recovered Item
Aleksandr is described as being 6ft 2in tall, with a slim build and brown hair. When he was last seen, his clothing consisted of a beige jumper, black jeans, and he was carrying a yellow beanie hat. He was also wearing a red jacket, which was later recovered by police during a search of Seaforth Road in Stornoway.
Inspector Cowan urged anyone with information to come forward: "I would again urge anyone who has not yet spoken to police, or who may have even the smallest piece of information, to get in touch. No detail is too minor and may assist with our enquiries."
The family of Aleksandr Benga have expressed their gratitude for the help and support received over this challenging year and have requested that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.
