Nigel Farage has been comfortably re-elected as Clacton’s MP, securing 63.3% of the vote in Thursday’s by-election, despite a record-breaking field of 34 novelty and fringe candidates. The result means Farage immediately returns to the House of Commons when it resumes after summer recess next month.
Count Binface, the best-performing novelty candidate in modern British political history, came second with 26.9% of the vote. No other candidate surpassed 500 votes, and all 32 remaining candidates lost their deposits for failing to exceed the 5% vote share threshold.
Investigation into £5 Million Gift Resumes
Before Farage re-enters Parliament, the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner, Daniel Greenberg, will restart an investigation into whether Farage should have declared a £5 million ‘gift’ from a British crypto billionaire based in Thailand, received ahead of the 2024 general election. The commissioner is examining only whether Farage broke rules by not formally declaring the donation, not whether accepting it was appropriate.
Additionally, questions persist over support allegedly provided by convicted fraudster George Cottrell, nicknamed Posh George. According to the Sunday Times, the 32-year-old aristocrat supplied security and social media staff for Farage, which were also not declared. Farage has acknowledged he forced the by-election because of these stories, arguing Clacton voters should judge his conduct.
Potential Consequences if Rules Breached
If Greenberg finds a breach, the case will go to the Commons select committee on standards, which will decide punishment. A suspension of 10 sitting days would trigger a recall petition; if at least 10% of Clacton voters sign it, Farage loses his seat, and a new by-election would be held, where he could stand again. Main parties that sat out this by-election might then field candidates.
Farage received 22,239 votes in the by-election, more than the 21,225 he won in the 2024 general election, despite lower overall turnout. His campaign focused on national issues like immigration, taxes, and ‘dodgy’ businesses, rather than local specifics.
Constituency Record and Promises
Farage has faced scrutiny over time spent in Clacton; he reportedly does not hold in-person surgeries due to safety concerns, though his spokesperson says he offers online surgeries. In a campaign video, he cited donations to local causes, leading a Remembrance Day parade in Walton-on-the-Naze, and promoting furniture store Codgers after a fire, as well as Clacton as a tourist destination.
The restarted investigation could lead to another by-election in Clacton if the recall process is triggered, with Farage’s political future again in the hands of voters.
