Amsterdam Jewish School Targeted in Deliberate Explosion Attack, Mayor Condemns
An explosion has damaged a Jewish school in Amsterdam in what the city's mayor, Femke Halsema, described as "a deliberate attack against the Jewish community." The incident occurred early on Saturday in a residential neighborhood on the south side of the city, causing limited damage and no reported injuries.
Police Response and Investigation Details
Police and firefighters arrived quickly at the scene, and Halsema noted in a press release that CCTV footage captured a person placing the explosive device. This attack follows heightened security at synagogues and Jewish institutions in the Dutch capital after an overnight arson attack at a synagogue in central Rotterdam on Friday.
Later that day, police arrested three men aged 18 to 19 and a 17-year-old boy after stopping a car driving suspiciously near another synagogue. The driver's description matched one of the perpetrators of the synagogue attack. Police have launched a "large-scale investigation into this serious incident" and are appealing for witnesses.
Context of Rising Antisemitism and Security Concerns
A police spokesperson stated, "It is not yet clear whether the suspects planned to detonate an explosive or set fire to another synagogue as well," with no potential motive given for the arrests. An unverified video showing an explosion near a building resembling the targeted synagogue circulated on social media on Friday, and police are examining it as part of their investigation.
In neighboring Belgium, an explosion caused a fire at a synagogue in Liege on Monday, adding to regional tensions. Halsema condemned the school attack, saying, "This is a cowardly act of aggression against the Jewish community. Jewish people in Amsterdam are increasingly confronted with antisemitism. This is unacceptable."
Concerns about possible attacks against Jewish communities worldwide have escalated following recent geopolitical events, including US and Israeli actions in Iran and Tehran's response. This incident underscores the urgent need for increased security measures and community vigilance in Amsterdam and beyond.
