Edinburgh Rapist Faces Life Sentence for Heinous Bus Stop Abduction and Basement Attack

A violent rapist who abducted a teenage girl at knifepoint from an Edinburgh bus stop and attacked her in his basement is now facing a potential life sentence for his spate of brutal crimes. Aaron Strachan, aged 21, was branded a deeply dangerous individual by Judge Michael O'Grady KC at the High Court in Edinburgh during proceedings on Tuesday.

Judge Condemns 'Totally Depraved and Utterly Wicked' Actions

The judge did not mince words when describing Strachan's conduct, labeling it as totally depraved and utterly wicked. He further characterized the rape as as disturbing and as wicked as I have seen in my many years on the bench, emphasizing the profound severity of the offense. Judge O'Grady explicitly stated that Strachan's actions represented an appalling course of criminal conduct and that the perpetrator was clearly out of control.

This horrific incident unfolded on 25 May 2025, when Strachan stalked his 15-year-old victim through the streets of the Scottish capital. He then produced a knife, forced her to accompany him, and marched her to his basement flat on York Place, where he subjected her to a brutal rape. The judge drew a chilling comparison, likening Strachan's predatory behavior to that of a wild animal stalking its prey.

Nightmare Scenario for Families

Judge O'Grady highlighted the broader terror inflicted by such crimes, noting that this case is the stuff of nightmares for every woman, every young girl, and every parent who waits at home for their child to return safe. Tragically, in this instance, the child did not return safe. Following the attack, the courageous teenager confided in her mother, which led to Strachan's arrest days later as he attempted to hide behind bushes in Edinburgh's Dalry area.

Guilty Pleas and Additional Violent Assaults

At a court hearing in December, Strachan entered guilty pleas to the charges of abducting and raping the teenager. His admission of guilt extended to two further serious assault charges involving male victims. These separate violent incidents included repeatedly striking one man on the hand with a knife and hitting another man on the head with a claw hammer, causing severe injury, permanent impairment, and disfigurement.

The court was informed of Strachan's extensive criminal history, which encompasses 13 previous convictions, some of which involved significant violence. In light of the gravity of these offenses and his dangerous profile, Judge O'Grady has requested a mandatory assessment for an Order for Lifelong Restriction (OLR).

Order for Lifelong Restriction and Court Orders

An OLR is a severe sentencing measure in Scotland, typically reserved for the most serious non-murder cases. It constitutes a lifelong sentence where the court sets a minimum jail term that must be served. Should the offender ever be released back into the community, they remain subject to a lifelong risk management plan under strict supervision.

During the proceedings, the judge also granted non-harassment orders, legally prohibiting Strachan—who appeared via video link from prison—from contacting any of his victims. The case has been adjourned, with sentencing scheduled for 16 June, where the full weight of justice will be delivered for these terrifying and violent crimes.
