A major police operation is underway across South London after a handcuffed prisoner managed to escape from custody while receiving medical treatment at a central London hospital.
Mohammed Awwal, 21, who was being held on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and robbery, made his daring escape from St Thomas' Hospital on Monday afternoon. The prisoner was reportedly handcuffed to a police officer at the time of his disappearance.
Urgent Public Warning
The Metropolitan Police have issued a stern warning to the public, urging people not to approach Awwal if spotted. Authorities describe him as "dangerous" and advise immediate contact with emergency services instead.
In an official statement, the Met confirmed: "We are appealing for the public's help to find Mohammed Awwal, who escaped from police custody at St Thomas' Hospital. He was arrested on suspicion of GBH and robbery."
Hospital Security Breach
The escape occurred around 3:15 PM on Monday, sending shockwaves through the medical facility located just across the Thames from the Houses of Parliament. Hospital staff and patients were reportedly stunned as police immediately locked down sections of the building.
An eyewitness described seeing "dozens of police officers swarming the area" within minutes of the escape, with armed units joining the search operation.
Ongoing Manhunt Intensifies
Police search teams have been scouring the Westminster and Lambeth areas throughout Monday evening and into Tuesday. The operation includes:

Previous Offences and Description
Awwal, who has connections across several London boroughs, was already wanted for failing to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court regarding separate robbery allegations.
The escaped prisoner is described as approximately 5ft 9ins tall with short black hair. At the time of his escape, he was wearing a grey tracksuit and white trainers, though police believe he may have changed clothing.
