Côte d'Ivoire Reach World Cup Knockouts for First Time

Côte d'Ivoire secured a historic 2-0 victory over Curaçao in Philadelphia, advancing to the World Cup knockout stage for the first time. Nicolas Pépé scored both goals, putting the Ivorians through as Group E runners-up.

Historic Qualification

Manager Emerse Faé urged his team to celebrate the milestone. "Celebrate this historic qualification, like we should," Faé said. "Once we're done celebrating, we want to go as far as possible in this competition. This is a young group. They're all at their first ever World Cup. They're playing well. There is a lot of solidarity in this group."

Côte d'Ivoire had previously reached the World Cup in 2006, 2010, and 2014 but never advanced past the group stage. The tournament's expansion from 32 to 48 teams increased Africa's allocation from five to ten spots, giving the Ivorians a clearer path.

Match Summary

The Ivorians took an early lead in the seventh minute after a defensive error by Curaçao's Juriën Gaari and Joshua Brenet allowed Yan Diomande to set up Pépé for a simple finish. Despite dominating possession, Côte d'Ivoire struggled to extend their lead in the first half, with Curaçao's Tahith Chong and Leandro Bacuna posing occasional threats.

In the 64th minute, Pépé sealed the win, curling a finish past goalkeeper Eloy Room after a pass from Ibrahim Sangaré. Curaçao continued to push forward but failed to score, ending their debut World Cup with one goal in three matches.

Curaçao's Performance

Curaçao proved competitive despite their limited resources. They held Germany to an equalizer before losing 7-1 and played a spirited 0-0 draw with Ecuador, where goalkeeper Eloy Room made 15 saves—the most in a World Cup match without extra time since 2014. Manager Dick Advocaat praised his team's effort. "This team has outdone itself against world-class sides," he said. "[Côte d'Ivoire's] wingers are worth 50m each."

Advocaat acknowledged the need for improvement: "We have to keep looking for players who are allowed to represent Curaçao. A few positions have to get better." The team's primary goal was qualifying for the Gold Cup and then the World Cup, which they achieved.

Impact of Tournament Expansion

The expanded format allowed Côte d'Ivoire to finally break through after years of near-misses. The Ivorians went undefeated in qualifying, winning eight of ten matches without conceding a goal. Their group stage campaign included a 1-0 win over Ecuador via Amad Diallo's 90th-minute winner and a narrow 2-1 loss to Germany.

Curaçao, one of four World Cup debutants, benefited from the expansion but lacked the depth to advance. Advocaat remained optimistic: "When you see how we played the second and third game, that's very promising."
