Charity campaigner's microlight crash death ruled accidental

A coroner has concluded that the death of a charity campaigner from injuries sustained in a microlight crash was accidental. Sarah Dines, 44, died from multiple injuries after the aircraft she was piloting came down in a field near Ramsey, Cambridgeshire, on 16 August 2024.

Details of the crash

The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 BST. The microlight, a two-seat Pegasus Quantum 15, crashed in a field close to the village of Ramsey. Dines was the sole occupant of the aircraft.

Emergency services were called to the scene, but Dines was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival. The cause of death was determined to be multiple injuries consistent with a high-impact crash.

Investigation and inquest

An inquest into the death was held at Cambridgeshire Coroner's Court. The coroner, Simon Milburn, heard evidence from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) and other witnesses.

The AAIB report indicated that the microlight had suffered a loss of engine power shortly after takeoff. The pilot, Dines, appeared to be attempting to return to the airfield when the aircraft stalled and crashed.

According to the coroner, there was no evidence of any pre-existing medical condition that could have contributed to the crash. The aircraft was also found to have been properly maintained and had no known defects.

Coroner's conclusion

Coroner Simon Milburn recorded a conclusion of accidental death. He stated: "Sarah Dines died as a result of injuries sustained in a microlight crash. The evidence suggests that the loss of engine power led to the aircraft stalling, and the crash was not the result of any deliberate act."

Dines was a well-known charity campaigner who had raised significant funds for various causes. She was described by friends and colleagues as a passionate and dedicated individual.

The coroner expressed his condolences to Dines's family and friends, noting the impact of her loss on the community. The family has been informed of the outcome of the inquest.
